Job Description

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following position. 

Purpose of the Job:

The Human Rights Officer is responsible for assisting in monitoring the State’s compliance with the recommendations of international and regional human rights bodies to Ethiopia. The Officer will also provide support in strengthening EHRC’s engagement with international and regional human rights bodies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in disseminating recommendations (concluding observations) of international and regional human rights mechanisms on the State Report of Ethiopia and follow-up on implementation; 
  • Monitor progress made by the State in implementing the recommendations of international and regional human rights mechanisms;
  • Assist in providing technical support to relevant State actors in implementing recommendations made by international and regional human rights mechanisms; 
  • Assist in capacity building initiatives for civil society, media, and other relevant actors in supporting the State to implement the recommendations of international and regional human rights mechanisms;
  • Support innovative strategies for a coordinated and effective approach to state reporting and implementation of recommendations such as the establishment of a national reporting and follow-up mechanism comprising of key stakeholders;
  • Support EHRC’s engagement with regional and international human rights mechanisms, including the timely submission of EHRC’s activity reports to these mechanisms;   
  • Support EHRC directorates, as relevant, in complying with international and regional human rights processes, standards, and developments;
  • Facilitate capacity building initiatives for state bodies, CSOs, and other relevant stakeholders on international and regional human rights standards and processes;
  • Ensure relevant regional and international human rights mechanisms are updated of EHRC activities, including by sharing EHRC statements and publications.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned by the Chief Commissioner or the Director of OCC

REPORT TO: Director, Office of the Chief Commissioner

DURATION: 1 year fixed term contract (as a project-based fixed term hire) but with a possibility of moving to long term employment in line with the new organizational design

SALARY RANGE: Gross monthly salary of ETB 19,157.00 - ETB 22,817.00 plus 20% benefits, depending on candidates qualification, experience and earning history

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • LLB or LLM in Human Rights Law or International Law, MA in Political Science or related fields.
  • 4 years of relevant experience for LLB and 2 years of relevant experience for LLM or MA.
  • Experience in working or engaging with international or regional human rights organizations.
  • Experience in supporting State institutions to comply with their international obligations.
  • Experience in capacity building and training initiatives.
  • Good grasp of a wide range of human rights areas.
  • Good analytical and communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Proficiency in Amharic and English is required. Knowledge of other international working languages of inter-governmental organizations is advantageous.
