Role and responsibilities
The WASH Assistant will be based in Shire Area office with travels within Tigray region. He or she will work under the supervision of the WASH Technical Officer, according to and as reflected in objectives stated in project description and budgets to donors and in line with NRC policy program, as well as with Plan of Action and strategy in place in the country.
Generic responsibilities
- Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
- Assist a range of support with the implementation of the WASH CCs portfolios according to plan of action
- Implements procedures and activities within WASH as delegated
- Responsible for organizing and delivery of tasks in line with priorities and standards
- Develop and maintain knowledge of the WASH area of work in which technical assistance and support is being provided, in order to be most effective in supporting the team
- Use initiative in day to day problem solving in line with agreed procedures, priorities and standards for WASH activities
- Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
- Ensure proper filing of documents
- Promote and share ideas for improvement in your area of expertise
Specific responsibilities
- Mobilize beneficiary communities implementing WASH activities through participatory approaches
- Facilitate appropriate community involvement in the design and delivery of essential WASH services and facilities
- Conduct field-based needs assessments
- Support the preparation of BoQ, technical drawings and technical specifications of WASH facilities and services
- Conduct WASH activities in IDP/returnees settlements or host communities and schools under the guidance of the WASH/Shelter Technical Officer and coordinating and supervising community mobilizers
- Supervise appropriate O&M of WASH facilities and services
- Carry out technical training sessions (according to identified needs) for community members
- Raise the awareness on issues relevant to the community and encourage their participation in projects
- Ensure mainstreaming of cross-cutting issues (i.e. gender and environment protection) in implementation of activities
- Train the IDP community on settlement care (with focus on WASH facilities), maintenance and protection issues
Job Requirements
Generic professional competencies:
- BSc Degree or Diploma in Water, Civil, Environmental or Hydraulic Engineering is essential
- 1-2 years working experience as a Project Assistant in a humanitarian/recovery context
- Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
- Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
- Fluency in Local languages. Fluency in English, both written and verbal is highly desirable
Context/Specific skills, knowledge and experience:
- Knowledge of the operating context in Tigray Region will be an added advantage
- Experience in implementation of hardware component of WASH projects (i.e. water distribution facilities, latrines, bathing facilities, handwashing points and drainage system construction and/or rehabilitation, vector control, Constructions etc.)
- Experience in undertaking training of staff or target groups
- Ability to use MS Office and AutoCAD software is desirable
