Role and responsibilities
The purpose of the Child Protection Coordinator position is to implement delegated Child Protection project portfolio
Generic responsibilities
These responsibilities shall be the same for all positions with the same title. The responsibilities shall be short and essential. Details belong in the Work- and Professional Development Plan.
- Line management of CC project field staff
- Adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures
- Contribute to CC strategy development, project proposals and provide input on needs and gaps
- Manage and implement delegated portfolio of Child Protection projects (activities, budget and project documentation) as delegated from PM in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements, and ensure high technical quality
- Provide regular progress reports to Program Head(PH)
- Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need of protection, explore and asses new and better ways to assist
- Promote and share ideas for improvement and necessary changes in the activities
- Ensure capacity building of project staff and transfer key skills
- Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities and other key stakeholders
- Promote the rights of IDPs/returnees in line with the advocacy strategy
Specific responsibilities
These responsibilities shall be adapted to the particularities of the job location and context, phase of operation, strategic focus and type of Program intervention. This section shall be revised whenever a new employee is hired or the context changes significantly.
- Design and implement tools and strategy for community and family-based child Program in Adiharush, Mayini and Hitsats refugee camps as well as Internal displacement setting (IDPs’) in Tigray Region
- Ensure periodical monitoring of the Program and provide technical support to CP staff for enhancing mainstreaming of protection in other sectors in the intervention areas.
- Supervise and monitor budget utilization of the Program for the intended purpose and liaise with logistics and finance that all Program needed items (supplies) are requested on time and their timely delivery.
- Design community mobilization sensitization tools and strategy for ensuring community empowerment and participation in child protection Program .
- Investigate and facilitate introduction of new technology, methods and approaches in order to improve the quality of the activities
- Ensure that staff records in all offices in the area are up to date and filed appropriately.
- Coordinate the Child Protection initiatives according to strategy, proposals, budgets and plans.
- Break down the annual operational plans into weekly, monthly and quarterly implementation plans.
- To set up in coordination with UNHCR, ARRA, and other IPs, screening arrangements, including community mobilization within the camp setting;
- To support and maintain alternative care: supervise spontaneous community and family care, establishment of foster care arrangements, including adapted care options for adolescent males.
- To provide support, training, and guidance to staff on individual case management at all stages: identification, interview, care arrangement, tracing, reunification, reintegration, and BIA/BID committee;
- To establish a referral system in coordination with the Project Manager and maintain regular liaison with other stakeholders (Medical Staff, UNHCR, ARRA, IPs, Police Security Department, etc.);
- Monitor and evaluate the activities of child protection project, advocating for strong coordination between various sectors, particularly with regards to health, education, youth and livelihood sectors;
- To actively contribute to and represent NRC in Child Protection forums promoting the needs of unaccompanied children.
Job Requirements
Generic professional competencies for this position:
- University degree or higher Education in relevant area - psychology, social work, Sociology & etc. and minimum five or more years work experience in managing child protection Program preferably in refugee/IDP settings.
- Experience from working as a Child Protection Coordinator in a humanitarian/recovery context
- Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
- Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
Knowledge about own manager skills/profile
- Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts

- Fluency in English, both written and verbal
Context related skills; knowledge and experience (shall be adapted to the specific position):
- Knowledge of the context in Ethiopia.
- Knowledge of Tigrigna local language
