ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION

The Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) is one of the first professional associations in Ethiopia and was stablished on July 2, 1962 G.C with 100 founding members through a formal charter granted to it by the then Emperor Haile Selassie I. EMA is member of World Medical Association since 1994 G.C.

EMA’s head office is based in Addis Ababa and has a presence in five regions represented by its nine regional branch offices (Gonder, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Dessie, Jimma, Adama, Harare, Hawassa and Arba Minch). EMA has been operational for over 59 years on promoting quality of medical service in Ethiopia and evidence-based medicine through publishing the Ethiopian Medical Journal (EMJ). The mission of the association is to: Ensure that the community gets quality health service and care; Promote the highest standards in medical education, science, art and practice and Ensure the rights and benefits of medical professionals (doctors) and act as their voice

Thus, the association would like to invite experienced and competent candidates for the Senior Research Officer  vacant post: 

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the EMJ Research and Publication Manager, the Senior Research Officer is responsible for initiation as well as conducting researches for providing technical support for the management of EMA, the government and other stakeholders who have a stake in health-related issues. Is also responsible to coordinate, facilitate, and provide technical support for the publication initiative of EMA. The job incumbent is also responsible to avail research out puts for public consumption through publications and disseminations including encouraging members of the Association to conduct research in health sector. The job holder will assist in the copy editing and final layout check of manuscripts accepted for publication on EMJ.

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, Prioritize and frame the research needs of the association.
  • Lead the design, conduct, and use of research for organizational learning in the Association
  • Promotes research, learning, and knowledge transfer culture in the organization and the dissemination of research results,
  • Lead the identification, write up, and application of research and related grant applications in the interest of the Association
  • Work to enhance the role of the Association in the promotion of research evidence used to improve the quality of health care in the country
  • Design ways to enhance uptake of research evidence published on EMJ by practitioners, health managers, and health policymakers in the country and beyond
  • Prepares call for paper and invites from potential researchers by disseminating the invitation using appropriate media for maximum response rate.
  • Facilitates the planning and development of different publications that address priority issues of the Association.
  •  Facilitates the collection of manuscripts and forward prospective papers to the EMJ Editorial Board
  • Supports the organization of conferences, seminars, meetings, and campaigns related to health research and coordinate the publication of the proceedings, call for actions, and position papers
  • Conduct copy editing and layout check for all manuscripts accepted for publication on EMJ Communicate authors for final proofreading of their manuscripts before publication
  • Arranges training and experience-sharing forums for the members of EMA on research and publication matters through collaboration with other units of the organization.
  • Perform other duties assigned to him /her by the immediate supervisor.

Staff Reporting to the Job Holder: Two

Position Grade: VI

Job Requirements

Education and Qualification

  • MPH/MSc/MD/BSc in any Health-related professional.
  • Minimum 6/8 years of related experience with strong research and publication background and skills. In addition, extensive knowledge and experience in research copy editing and publication is mandatory. Experience in an international NGO environment is advantageous.

Additional Training:

  • Research Training Certificate
  • SPSS or STATA or Ep-Info or another statistical package software
  • Project/ Program Management training Certificate is an added value

  • Having strong editorial skills.
  • Having strong statistical software utilization.
  • Strong MS office and the ability to use new technologies. 
  • Consistency demonstrating accuracy and preciseness.

Language

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
