Job Summary

Clean water, decent toilets, and hygiene (WASH) are three essentials that help people lead dignified and healthy lives. They should be normal for everyone, but for millions of people, they are not. WaterAid strives to make clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene a normal part of everyday life for everyone, everywhere.

Job Purpose:

The Communications and Campaign's role is a crucial function in media & public communication of WaterAid Ethiopia (WAE) to enhance amongst the public, development sector, and other stakeholders (both governmental and NGOs, civil society organizations, and the donor community at large). The role will support the organization’s local and national communication and campaign works and learning and sharing initiatives. 

 Job Description:

Communication & Campaigns:

  • Assess, compile and disseminate the organization’s development processes, successes, and research outputs/products to the public, relevant decision-makers, and donors to influence policy and practices change in advancing WASH.
  • Lead efforts to document lessons from WAE projects, including research studies, preparation of case studies, and other sources.
  • Disseminate learning and information to WAE staff and external target groups through publications, web posts, webinars, training workshops, and other relevant and innovative means.
  • Ensure WAE research and knowledge products are effectively documented, disseminated, including through the media and other means, to maximize impact.
  • Support in developing press releases and stories to the media to help increase WAE’s visibility.
  • Work as the focal point of contact of WAE with the media by developing and maintaining positive and proactive relationships in order to support the work of WaterAid and its partners.
  • Develop content for campaigns and liaise with the media to push approved content on the media.
  • Plan & design content for WAE social media channels and push them out regularly
  • Continuously update the WaterAid website as required

Knowledge Management: 

  • Facilitate WAE’s Knowledge Management functions in line with WAE’s overall strategic direction and Country Program Strategy.
  • Play a key role in developing and implementing WAE’s Knowledge Management Strategy in cooperation with the relevant staff.
  • Supports efforts to be well-positioned within the WASH sector so as to help ensure WAE’s contribution to sector knowledge is maximally effective.
  • Develops and supports mechanisms to promote knowledge sharing within WAE and beyond

Partnership & Advocacy:

  • Work with WAE partners to upscale their capacity for effective influencing and KM
  • Represent WAE in advocacy and knowledge-related forums and networks nationally and, if requested, internationally

Systems and Procedures:

  • Develops and implements WAE’s KM Strategy in line with the CSP, annual work plans, and project requirements. 
  • Develop and update WaterAid Ethiopia KnowledgeNet
  • Regularly updates and uses WA’s global Learning and Communications Strategy and follows WA’s Dissemination Guide. 
  • Familiarizes WAE staff with these strategies and guides.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • A Master’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism and other related social sciences
  • 5 years of experience in communications & related fields for MA holder and 7 years of experience for 1st degree holder in communications, campaign, and media work
  • Extensive knowledge of communications and campaigns content development
  • Fluent English-speaking and wring skills
  • Proficient writer, with an insightful ability to tailor and deliver messages to multiple audiences and communication channels.
  • Possesses good networking skills, takes initiative, can foresee potential challenges, opportunities, and lead solutions.
  • Excellent photography, writing and editing skills coupled with good interpersonal relations.
  • Excellent Microsoft computer knowledge of packages like Desktop Publishing, Adobe, MS Word, and Access
