Country Office: Ethiopia

Work Base: Addis Ababa with frequent travel to bases

Availability: As Soon As Possible

Salary Scale: EMS09

Salary and other benefits: Gross salary ETB 42,600.00 with additional benefits

Contract Duration: Six months with the possibility of Extension

General Assignment:

Summary of position

We are looking for an organized and experienced trainer to join our organization. The trainer will be responsible for co-creating and delivering a range of training. The ideal candidate will be a confident public speaker and a devoted educator with knowledge of humanitarian work, especially in the field of protection, gender, or Psychosocial Support how has a strong interest in improving staff performance.

The trainer will be responsible for increasing the skills, knowledge, and practices of humanitarian staff and government health workers in the areas of Protection (such as GBV and Child Protection), Gender and Psychosocial Support, by delivering training across all AAH field bases (currently 7 locations across the country), using existing training materials produced by the different specialist areas (clusters).

Purpose (The substantive focus of the job encompassing scope, depth and difficulty of work both conceptual and applied) Deliver training and coaching at field level to staff to increase their ability to deliver humanitarian programs. They will be required to travel between bases, delivering classroom, individual and remote training on specific topics as directed by the Protection department and help increase the capacity to respond to current and new humanitarian situations as defined by current program commitments and identified needs.

Engagement: (The focus of interaction both internally and externally needed to deliver a service seek collaboration and build effective partnerships) You will work closely with AAH program and support staff in the field, building strong working relationships with program managers from different sectors, and support staff who will also receive basic training. You will represent Action Against Hunger Ethiopia when delivering external training and may be asked to participate in relevant technical meetings that inform our approach and help understand and identify gaps in knowledge.

You will be responsible for delivering the agreed training courses, managing your training budget and ensuring feedback and learning mechanisms and reports are provided, able to coordinate your training schedule with each field operation and manage your travel arrangements, with the ultimate objective of ensuring the levels of knowledge, awareness and practice are increased in the protection, gender and MHPSS areas.

Essential job duties:

To deliver training that increases the skills, knowledge and practices of humanitarian and government staff in the 3 keys thematic area of the department: Protection, Gender and MHPSS (including PSEA)– AAH and government staff

  • Develop with the technical advisors the priority training topics to be delivered
  • In collaboration with the technical advisors, agree targets to be achieved (for instance, % of staff to receive training)
  • Prepare the training materials using currently available training material or develop following the sector/IASC standards
  • Develop a training needs tool to identify need and track the roll-out of training courses/activities
  • Consult with other managers and leadership about the needs of staff and government staff on Protection, Gender and MHPSS
  • Conduct training in different modalities as needed (e.g. classroom, remote, one-to-one)
  • Maintain a database of all training materials
  • Review employee performance and learning
  • Manage the budget, ensuring procedures (for materials for example) are ordered as soon as possible and ensure that budget forecasting for the next 12 months is conducted, reviewed and well-managed
  • Coordinate and monitor enrollment, schedules, costs, and equipment
  • Produce monthly/weekly progress reports to show progress towards the target
  • Maintaining an up-to-date and accurate record of trainee progress and achievements
  • Critically examining the trainees’ understanding and progress and making necessary adjustments to the program
  • Scheduling training sessions to minimize disruption to normal working.

Essential job duties

Support the department to implement mainstreaming of the thematic areas into the mission (AAH staff only): Support Protection Mainstreaming training and awareness

  • Under the guidance of the technical advisors, support the mission to achieve protection mainstreaming by training and supporting field staff using mainstreaming tools Support Gender Mainstreaming training and awareness
  • Under the guidance of the technical advisors, support the mission to achieve gender mainstreaming by training and supporting field staff
  • Support base managers on implementing the gender minimum standards tool to improve gender, age and disability equality in the workplace Support Staff Well-Being Mainstreaming and Support
  • Under the guidance of the technical advisors, support the mission to achieve great staff wellbeing mainstreaming by training and supporting field staff
  • Provide support, guidance and interventions relating to staff psychosocial well-being to HR, FCs and management as requested
  • Support the implementation of activities that improve and strengthen staff well-being (using the Staff Well-Being guidance)

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

  • The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required and in line with Labor Law.
  • Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business purposes. While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as to infectious diseases.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • University Master and or BA degree in education, psychology, public health or similar related field
  • Experience in delivering formal training
  • Experience in providing coaching and mentoring
  • Previous humanitarian experience preferred
  • Understanding of main protection principles and able to learn and deliver a diverse range of topics and subjects (as directed)
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to gain trust and build relationships with partners, staff, and government
  • Language – high level of written and spoken English
  • Strong computer skills (excel, outlook, word)
