About Roots Ethiopia

 Roots Ethiopia is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization incorporated under the Wisconsin Statutes in the United States of America. Roots Ethiopia is registered as a Foreign Charity by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia with Agency for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO), under Registration No. 3847. It works together with local communities to improve schools, educate children, and enable livelihoods. These are community priorities, so they are our priorities.

The overall objective is to improve access to and quality of primary education in Ethiopia. Specific objectives include:

a)  To provide learning resources for under-resourced primary schools;

b)  To provide school sponsorship for underprivileged students;

c)   To provide income generating grants for poor families with school children;

Roots Ethiopia (RE) currently implements projects in 4 zones of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region of Ethiopia. RE invites you, the qualified candidate, to apply for the following position;

Job Summary:

Under the guidance of the Country Manager (CM), s/he supports Roots Ethiopia’s operations particularly in project monitoring and evaluation, and learning. S/he works to improve our understanding of the impact of our projects, and how we can make them more effective. S/he will maintain the M&E systems of the country programs, ensuring they are implemented effectively. This needs to be supported by conducting and analyzing research data, writing reports, and building M&E capacity of RE.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities

The MERL Coordinator will

  • Develop and strengthen monitoring and evaluation procedures for Roots Ethiopia;
  • Monitor activities, expenditures and progress towards achieving outputs;
  • Develop impact indicators and a monitoring strategy for project success;
  • Monitor and evaluate overall progress on achievement of project results;
  • Monitor the effects and sustainability of the project's results;
  • Provide recommendation for further improvement of logical frame work;
  • Provide feedback to the Project Manager on implementation of activities;
  • Suggest strategies for improving efficiency and effectiveness of the project;
  • Identify bottlenecks in completing project activities and develop plans to minimize or eliminate such bottlenecks;
  • Provide inputs, accurate data or statistics for all relevant reports to the Country Manager and the US team;
  • Produce progress reports monthly, quarterly, and annually on all project activities, and submit to the Country Manager and to the project signatories;
  • Participate in mid-term and annual project reviews, in planning workshops and assist the Project Manager in preparing relevant reports;
  • Assist the project personnel with M&E tools and support them to ensure effective implementation of M&E;
  • Design research tools and methodologies, collect and analyze research data, and write reports to contribute to project proposals, implementation and technical development;
  • Document knowledge, experiences, best practices, and share across the organization.
  • Document project learnings, case stories, success stories, reports, etc.;
  • Perform other duties as required

Job Requirements

Required Qualification, Experience & Skills:

  • Have at least University Degree in Project Management, Monitoring and Evaluation or other related disciplines
  • Has at least 8 years of relevant work experience
  • Has excellent MS Office application skills including MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-Access, MS-Power point, etc.
  • Proficiency in English and Amharic languages
  • Has excellent coordination and time management skills
  • Excellent Database management skills
  • Be a good team player

Required Travel: Frequent travels within project implementation areas

Key Working Relationships: Programs Coordinator, Project Manager, Project Officer, HR and Operations Coordinator, and Finance Officer
