New Zealand Milk Products (Ethiopia) S.C. is a joint venture between New Zealand dairy co-operative Fonterra and local food manufacturer Faffa Food. We manufacture and distribute our flagship brand Anchor at our milk powder dry blending plant in Addis Ababa, which is the first of its type in Ethiopia. Anchor was created in New Zealand in 1886 and has since grown to become one of the top global dairy brands with a wide range of products sold in more than 100 countries.

Role Purpose

The Head of Human Resources is responsible for delivering the Fonterra (NZMPE) people strategy and ensuring that people processes, programs and systems are aligned to the Business strategy and objectives. 

Workforce Planning

  • Understanding the implications of the workforce planning strategy for the business unit and functions and deploying actions to proactively manage workforce supply and demand
  • Managing local restructuring programs of work

Enhancing Employee engagement

  • Facilitating the development of the action plan to address key areas of focus from the annual employee engagement survey, ensuring alignment with the company action plan
  • Working with the leadership team to deliver actions that will drive an increase in engagement

Employee Relations

  • Representing local ER issues to the central Operations team for advice and action as required
  • Advising on case management and local disciplinary actions as required
  • Leads change to enable sustainable people practices by:
  • Engaging with senior leaders to develop the BU’s capacity and readiness for change
  • Developing and implementing effective change processes to support the people strategy
  • Building the capability of leaders to drive and manage change in a sustainable way

Manages the team by:

  • Setting the direction and accountability for the team and ensuring they are appropriately resourced
  • Providing a positive role model by demonstrating the Fonterra Values and providing a working environment that drives high performance and attracts and retains talent
  • Building individual and team capability through coaching and mentoring
  • Demonstrating commitment to Health, Safety and Wellness

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Developing, implementing and maintaining human resources policies and procedures, including training programs to educate and promote awareness of regulatory compliance
  • Maintaining the work structure by updating job requirements and job descriptions for all positions
  •  Preparing employees for assignments by establishing and conducting orientation and training programs.
  • Assesses staff training needs, develops, implements and monitors effectiveness of staff training programs
  •  Supervising and managing the implementation of performance management system, staff development and orientation processes
  • Deliver performance management programs that drive a high-performance culture
  •  Directing and managing the recruitment and selection process, and train line managers in interviewing and assessment procedures
  • Producing reports on key metrics, including remuneration and benefits, absenteeism and turnover. Ensures reported issues are addressed
  • Enforcing management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending human resource policies and procedures.
  • Advises senior management potential HR risks regarding staff management issues and manages staff issues in line with the HR policy and with the local labour laws
  • Taking the lead in ensuring employee safety, welfare, wellness and health.

Job Requirements

Education

  • BA degree/Masters  in human resources management or equivalent
  • Minimum 6+ years’ work experience in human resources
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues
  • Experience in conflict resolution, disciplinary processes and conducting workplace investigations
  • Significant experience in a relevant business environment, ideally within an ingredients based, FMCG or globally competitive business
  • People Management Experience

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong knowledge of Ethiopian labor laws and legal requirements.
  • Deep and broad knowledge of generalist HR processes gained in large, dynamic organisation
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and people-management skills and demonstrated capability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, focus and tasks with the highest potential for success.
  • Relates well to all kinds of people – up, down and sideways, inside and outside the organisation;  builds appropriate rapport; builds constructive and effective relationships; uses diplomacy and tact; can defuse even high tension situations comfortably
