 Climate Change Policy Manager – African Union C4 (43/19 ADD)

Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  

Main purpose of job:

To support British Embassy Addis Ababa’s work with the African Union to combat Climate Change, including diplomatic action to support delivery of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in December 2020.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • To support implementation of the Embassy’s COP26 strategy for the African Union working closely with economic, political, prosperity and communications colleagues. This will include ensuring that delivery COP26 objectives supports long-term decarbonisation, and resilience & adaptation objectives across AU member states, including clean growth, energy transition, transport and industrial decarbonisation, nature-based solutions and green finance.

  • To liaise with officials in the African Union on policy and operational elements of delivering COP26. This will include advising and supporting engagement between senior officials (including the Heads of Mission) and Ministers.

  • To lead engagement on UK supported African Youth Climate Coalition – notably facilitating its engagement with African Union.

  • To engage with wider actors working on Climate and Environment in Africa. This will include building relationships with working level contacts, representatives of businesses, and civil society activists.

  • To manage Ministerial and official visits from the UK related to COP26 and climate events in Addis Ababa. This could include planning and advising on visit agendas, coordinating with media colleagues, and supporting in events as required.

  • To hold a corporate responsibility objective (E.g. sustainability, crisis, L&D, anything which contributes/adds value to the wider corporate agenda of the Network)

Job Requirements

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, for instance, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Relations, Climate and Environment Science, etc.

  • A minimum of 2+ years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organizations or agencies, preferably in climate change.

  • Strong understanding of international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships. 

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

  • Experience working with, or for, multilateral organisations (e.g. African Union; UN Climate Change etc.)

  • Knowledge of financial / budget management principles or previous financial management experience.

  • Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills.

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field.

Additional information                       

Locally engaged staff of all grades will be entitled to paid annual leave as follows:
Up to 2 years 22 days
After 2 years services 25 days
After 5 years services 30 days

In addition to annual leave, the British Embassy observes up to a maximum number of 14 Ethiopian, British and Religious public holidays each year. A list of such Embassy holidays will be published each year. Office Staff required to work on these holidays will be granted time off in lieu or overtime where circumstances permit.
