Job Description

The International Centre of Insect Physiology & Ecology (icipe) seeks to hire a Senior Gender Expert who will drive and lead the project’s effort to advance gender equality throughout the project. S/he will lead the development and implementation of the project’s approach to gender. The gender team will collaborate, advise, and support project team, especially Impact Assessment and Monitoring & Evaluation, to expand internal capacity to design, implement gender sensitive projects and achieve project targets.  She/he will be a member of icipe Ethiopia office which is located at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).

 

General: The International Centre of Insect Physiology & Ecology (icipe) is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications. Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building. Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa. The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities. Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually. icipe is partnering with Mastercard Foundation to implement the MOre Young Entrepreneurs in Silk and Honey project (MOYESH). The purpose of this partnership intervention is to secure fulfilling and dignified employment and income for unemployed young women and men by scaling up integrated beekeeping and silk farming businesses, building on lessons learned from YESH project and leveraging the public-private partnerships that are already created. The MOYESH project targets to provide 100,000 youth with appropriate skills and to enable 100,000 youth (of which 60% are female) secure dignified and fulfilling work in four target regions of Ethiopia including the Amhara; Oromia; Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR); and Tigray.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Leads the development and implementation of the project’s approach to gender throughout its implementation.
  • Participates in designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating research activities that include and promote gender equality as well as social inclusion and local community empowerment. 
  • Leads the project’s gender team, including mentorship, coaching and performance management.
  • Advises and collaborate with the Impact Assessment and Monitoring and Evaluation, Communication and Business and Market System teams to integrate gender across the project cycle, and to advance the project’s overall gender target.
  • Drives the design and implementation of gender training programs for all staffs as well as support the capacity of partners on gender.
  • Develops tools that support gender analysis and gender sensitive project implementation.
  • Identifies and contributes to relevant learning networks and communities of practice. Represent the project at gender related events.
  • Identifies, document, and mobilizes gender related insight and learning from the project implementation.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Masters’ degree or PhD degree in social sciences, including international development, public health, gender/women’s studies or other relevant disciplines.
  • In depth knowledge in a technical or specialized field

Experience:

  • MSc with nine years of progressive responsibility in development sector with proven track record of integrating gender equality outcomes in projects.
  • PhD with two years of progressive responsibility in development sector with proven track record of integrating gender equality outcomes in projects.
  • Substantial experience working with youth and women in humanitarian or international development, ideally with a focus on economic empowerment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing gender analysis, design tools and trainings. Experience building capabilities in high-growth organizations.
  • Knowledge of current issues regarding gender issues in agricultural and rural development.
  • Familiarity with different stages of project cycle (design, implementation, supervision, monitoring and evaluation, reporting).

 

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage multiple partnerships. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate to a variety of audiences across cultures, locations and levels of the organization.
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and listening skills and ability to collaborate with various teams within and outside the project
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel)

Position level:   HG 16.

Minimum Base salary:                  

  •  Birr 51,874 per month (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)
